Day 23 — Avoid Arrogance

Everything you possess is from Allah. Humility attracts divine elevation; arrogance closes the heart and the doors of barakah.

Daily Morning Devotion with Imam Onike — Day 23: Avoid Arrogance
“No one who has the weight of a seed of arrogance in his heart will enter Paradise.” A man said, “But a man likes to have nice clothes and nice shoes.” The Prophet ﷺ said, “Verily, Allah is beautiful and He loves beauty. Arrogance is to disregard the truth and to look down upon people.”
— Hadith
Qur'anic Verse
“Do not (contemptuously) turn your face away from people, nor tread haughtily upon earth. Allah does not love the arrogant and the vainglorious.”
— Qur'an 31:18
Devotion

A Fourfold Reflection

From insight, to imagery, to honest self-recognition, to supplication.

Reflection

Humility attracts divine elevation. The one who lowers himself for the sake of Allah is the one Allah raises.

Metaphor — The Fruit Tree

“The more fruit a tree bears, the lower its branches bend. Likewise, the more knowledge and wisdom a person acquires, the more humble he or she should become.”

Lesson: Real greatness produces humility, not pride.

A Sign of Arrogance

If you say you are humble, you are likely arrogant. True humility does not announce itself; it is recognised by others, not claimed by oneself.

Prayer

“O Allah, protect me from pride, arrogance, and self-admiration, and adorn me with humility and good character.”
Muḥāsabah

Self-Examination

Character is often revealed by how we treat those who have nothing to offer us.

Ask yourself honestly

  1. 1

How do I treat people who cannot benefit me?

  2. 2

If I say I am humble — am I, in fact, already being arrogant?
