Day 28 — Prepare for Accountability

Every deed matters. Hold yourself accountable today so the Reckoning will be easier tomorrow.

Daily Morning Devotion with Imam Onike — Day 28: Prepare for Accountability
“Hold yourselves accountable before you are held accountable, and evaluate yourselves before you are evaluated, for the Reckoning will be easier upon you tomorrow if you hold yourselves accountable today.”
— ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb (RA)
Devotion

A Threefold Reflection

From insight, to imagery, to supplication.

Reflection

Live consciously, for Allah sees everything. Every word, every choice, every silence is recorded. The wise believer keeps a quiet daily audit of the soul before that audit is conducted for him.

“So whoever does an atom's weight of good will see it, and whoever does an atom's weight of evil will see it.”Qur'an 99:7–8

Metaphor — The Daily Mirror

A person checks a mirror every morning to remove dirt from the face before meeting people. Muḥāsabah is the mirror of the soul; it helps us identify spiritual stains before we meet Allah.

Lesson: A clean appearance impresses people, but a clean heart pleases Allah.

Prayer

“O Allah, make my reckoning easy, overlook my shortcomings, and grant me success on the Day of Accountability.” Aamiin.
Muḥāsabah

Self-Examination

Audit the soul honestly — the believer who measures himself today is lighter tomorrow.

Ask yourself honestly

  1. 1

Am I becoming closer to Allah than I was one year ago, or am I merely becoming older?

  2. 2

If my soul were taken today, would my book of deeds be one I am pleased to present?
